Dr. Nikolaos Nikolopoulos is Director of Research (Researcher A’) at the Chemical Process and Energy Resources Institute (CPERI) of the Centre for Research and Technology Hellas (CERTH). He holds a degree in Mechanical Engineering from the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) and holds a Ph.D. in the field of Computational Fluid Mechanics, namely the Aerodynamics Division of the Fluid Mechanics Laboratory.
Dr. Nikolaos Nikolopoulos is in charge of a research team at CPERI / former ISFTA (Institute for Solid Fuels Technology and Applications), which focuses on the design, development and optimization of energy resource utilization systems and processes, especially by means of mathematical and/or computational modeling. He is a Scientific Responsible in European and National programs and service programs and has many years of experience in the management of research projects.
The emphasis of his research activity at CERTH / CPERI lies on developing and applying pioneering methods of computational fluid engineering in the modeling of multiphase flows, ranging from the field of power plants up to smart grids. In recent years, the research team structured under his guidance, apart from the fields of Computational Fluid Mechanics, has been as well dealing with the development and application of one-dimensional algorithms of dynamic behavior of energy systems, both for technologies a) of solid fuels and b) the generation and distribution of electricity and heat, based on Renewable Energy Sources (RES), from the building level and the low and medium voltage grid, up to the level of a smart city. His research work has been presented in 166 publications in scientific journals and international conferences, 24 oral presentations and 6 books and has gained significant international recognition (more than 2,040 citations (excl. from all authors), h-index = 25, according to Scopus).
